INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLANS (IEPs)
Students do not have to be identified through an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC), as Exceptional, to receive special education support. Classroom teachers, special education teachers and school administration work with students and parent(s)/guardian(s) as a team to provide special education resources and support for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
IEPs are a working document. SERTs will meet with students at the beginning of the year to review and update the IEP. IEPs are shared with parent(s)/guardian(s) mid-October, or as requested, for review and feedback.
TRANSITION FROM GRADE 8 TO GRADE 9
As teens transition to high school, their elementary school will share information with the Grade 9 SERT for the upcoming school year. Students along with parent(s)/guardian(s) will have the opportunity to meet with the Grade 9 SERT in February/March for the upcoming school year to discuss the transition from elementary to secondary school.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students may work towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), an Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC), or a Certificate of Accomplishment (COA).
CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT (COA)
Students who leave school before fulfilling the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the Ontario Secondary School Certificate may be granted a Certificate of Accomplishment.
The Certificate of Accomplishment may be a useful means of recognizing achievement for students who plan to take certain vocational programs or other kinds of further training, or who plan to find employment after leaving school.
TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO POST SECONDARY
A student with an IEP may be able to access accommodations at college/university. Once a student has accepted an offer from a post-secondary institution it is important for them to make an appointment with that institution's accessibility services to ensure that accommodations are in place for September.
